There are two different blood testing protocols established in Tennessee. Nashville has it’s own crime lab and protocols. In all other counties, the blood is tested by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI).
Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Policy and Procedure
First, let’s discuss the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation testing policy. A law enforcement office has a toxicology form to send into the TBI. The officer can request alcohol or drugs. Usually, the officer checks both boxes. Once the sample arrives at the TBI lab location, it is tested only for alcohol. If the test result comes back under the legal limit of .08, the TBI lab will retest the sample for drugs. In vehicular homicide cases, the test will be for both alcohol and drugs.
The Metro Nashville Police Crime lab tests for both alcohol and drugs at the same time. So, the results are faster.
What are the labs looking for in their search of your blood?
- Alcohol
- Methamphetamine
- Amphetamine
- Opiates
- Buprenorphine
- Cannabinoids
- Barbiturates
- Benzodiazepines
- Oxycodone
- Fentanyl
- Zolpidem
These are the main drug categories if drugs searched. The big battle then comes does that level reported impair you’re driving.
